About me
Costa Rican contemporary artist who has always developed themes related to plant growth and environmental conservation… His motto: “Let the plants grow!” ; which is an interesting perspective of the artist, where the best way to help is simply to let the plants grow… He has recently been listed as ARTIVIST for his message in his recent work.
His artistic career begins at an early age participating in art competitions at school and college, and receiving awards. At the age of 16, he learned wood engraving at the Central Bank Museum. Later he takes sculpture courses, guiding him to experiment with many materials. He studied Agronomy and graduated from EARTH University, where he studied carpentry, and began an attraction for wood; also acquired knowledge of plants. Later, in 2002, he joined the art school: Casa Del Artista. Later, obtained his postgraduate degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Costa Rica; further enriching their learning in design and flora. In 2008 he was selected in the Cow Parade of San José, with the cow Monstera Deliciosa.
In 2011 Mauricio moved to the city of Shanghai, China, where he lived for 3 years as a landscaper. It is at this stage of life that he is interested in oriental buildings to create his art, developing the artistic concept of “Vegetification”. Likewise, he acquired a great oriental influence in the use of colors and using techniques such as Chinese ink. In 2014 he returned to Costa Rica and continued to work as a landscaper with multiple projects on the coasts of the country. This allows you to visit sawmills and rescue the “ribs” from the trunks of the Pochote tree for engraving, and this led Mao to explore various woodcut techniques to take advantage of this wasted resource. In 2019, Mao is selected in a Print Art Biennale in Mexico, later in 2020 is selected in a Contemporary Art Biennale in London, In 2021 was chosen for the XIV edition of VALOARTE organized by the Artflow Gallery and dedicated to national artists; In 2022 he has being selected in the prestigious Salon Nacional which is the Costa Rican Biennale of Contemporary Art, and the Chianciano Biennale in Siena Italy. Today Mauricio is immersed in the preparation of the next individual exhibition whose main topic is the Cataclysms, developing an apocalyptic vision in order to create awareness of environmental conservation.
